R3D HQ, MQ or LQ? Choose by production risk, not ego

RED gives KOMODO three R3D quality choices. The best setting is the one that protects the scene, the post path and the shoot day.

RED’s own guidance

RED recommends HQ for high-complexity scenes, VFX and stills-from-motion workflows; MQ for cinema and high-end television; and LQ for television, online content, documentary, interviews and long takes. That is a useful starting point because it frames quality as a production decision rather than a prestige badge.

Reference data rates

At 6K 17:9 and about 24 fps, RED’s published reference figures are roughly 280 MB/s for HQ, 175 MB/s for MQ and 110 MB/s for LQ. RED explicitly notes that actual data rate depends on scene complexity and capture settings, so treat those values as planning references rather than guarantees.

A practical decision test

  • Choose HQ when image complexity, VFX extraction, heavy finishing or frame grabs materially increase the cost of compression artefacts.
  • Choose MQ when you want a strong cinema-quality balance between image information and practical media volume.
  • Choose LQ when long takes, documentary reality, interviews or online delivery make record time and storage a major production constraint.
  • If the shoot is mission-critical, test the exact scene class before the production day. Fine texture, foliage, confetti, water, smoke and noise can stress compression differently.

The hidden cost

Compression choice affects more than card runtime. It affects offload time, backup capacity, travel-drive quantity, proxy generation, archive cost and how quickly the data team can safely turn media around. A setting that looks “better” on the camera menu can make the overall production less reliable if the data plan cannot support it.
