Free RED KOMODO Field Checklist

01 / Project + delivery

Master deliverable, duration and principal aspect ratio are defined.Secondary deliverables (9:16, 1:1, 4:5, teasers, silent-caption versions) are listed.Project time base and intended recording frame rates are agreed.Story-critical shots are separated from nice-to-have coverage.Approval owner for factual claims, graphics, names and final delivery is known.

02 / Camera build

KOMODO body, mount/adapters and lenses have been physically tested together.Lens support, matte box, filters and cables do not introduce mechanical strain or clearance problems.Camera firmware and project settings have been checked before travel or client arrival.Date, time, project naming and roll/card naming convention are set consistently.Tripod/gimbal/handheld/support build has been tested at working weight, not just on a prep table.

03 / R3D + image pipeline

File format is intentionally set to R3D when RAW flexibility is required.Sensor format/resolution is chosen with field of view, frame rate and delivery crop in mind.R3D quality (HQ/MQ/LQ) is chosen for scene complexity, record time and post risk.White-balance intent is set deliberately and checked under the real lighting.ISO/monitoring choice is intentional and understood as metadata/monitoring context rather than extra sensor exposure.IPP2 / REDWideGamutRGB / Log3G10 finishing path is understood by whoever will handle post.Any monitoring LUT/look is identified and will not be confused with the camera-original data.

04 / Exposure + monitoring

Histogram has been checked on the real scene.RGB exposure indicators show no unintended channel clipping in story-critical areas.False color or the crew’s agreed exposure tool has been checked on faces, whites, practicals and highlights.Bright saturated sources such as LEDs/signage have been checked for individual-channel clipping.A short test clip has been reviewed when the lighting or contrast range is unusually risky.Frame guides or equivalent monitoring are enabled for any contracted secondary aspect ratio.

05 / Sound

Primary microphone is close enough for the intended dialogue quality.Headphones are connected and the actual signal is monitored during takes.Clothing rub, HVAC, refrigerators, generators, traffic cycles and room reflections have been checked.Room tone will be recorded at each principal location.Wild lines / key sound effects are listed when they would be difficult to recreate later.External-recorder naming/timecode/sync method is understood if dual-system sound is being used.

06 / Media + data

Only approved/qualified CFast media and a tested reader are in the working kit.Card capacity is sufficient for the chosen R3D quality and longest expected shooting block.At least two physically separate verified destinations are available before source media is reused.The team knows who has authority to release/reformat a card.Complete camera-original folder structure will be copied rather than selected clips only.Checksum-capable verification is part of the offload process.A media log records roll/card ID, destinations, verification and release status.Observed reader + destination write speed is fast enough for the planned card-turnaround cycle.Storage includes realistic safety margin, duplicate copies and archive requirements.

07 / Power + environment

Batteries are charged, labelled and matched to the expected shooting duration.DC power/cables have been tested with the actual accessory load if external power is planned.The camera’s 0–40°C published operating range has been considered for the location.Ventilation is not obstructed by the rig or weather protection.Sensor calibration / camera health warnings have been checked before the performance begins.Condensation/acclimatisation risk has been considered when moving between very different temperatures.

08 / Production + continuity

Location access, permissions, load-in and parking/security process are confirmed.Talent releases/permissions and intended usage are addressed.Wardrobe, props and product states that affect continuity are documented.Vertical-safe staging has been rehearsed where 9:16 is a real deliverable.Must-have interview/story proof is protected before decorative B-roll.Room tone, safety takes, inserts and cutaways are captured before striking the setup.

09 / Wrap + post handoff

Every card is accounted for and has a final status.Two verified copies exist before source media is released.Camera originals remain immutable after handoff.Original filenames, roll identity and timecode will be preserved through editorial.Proxy workflow, if used, has a tested path back to R3D originals.Color-management intent and monitoring look are documented for post.Deliverables, captions, graphics, rights and QC responsibilities are assigned.Archive expectation is explicit: camera originals, audio, project files, graphics and final masters.

How to use this

This is a production discipline checklist, not a substitute for the current RED operation guide, qualified-media list, local safety requirements, insurance, releases or an experienced camera/data team. Adapt it to the scale and risk of the job.
