KOMODO for VFX, fine detail and frame extraction: when HQ earns the storage
Compression risk rises when the frame is complex and post is unforgiving. That is where RED points users toward HQ.
Why HQ exists
RED recommends HQ for VFX, extremely detailed scenes and stills-from-motion work. Those are situations where the image may be inspected, keyed, tracked, reframed or extracted more aggressively than in a straightforward interview edit.
Scenes that deserve a test
- Fine foliage, grass, hair or fabric across large areas.
- Water, smoke, particles, confetti or rain.
- Heavy texture and high-frequency production design.
- Green/blue-screen work that will be keyed.
- Shots intended for significant stabilisation, VFX or still extraction.
Plan the knock-on effect
HQ can push media throughput dramatically higher. Confirm card capacity, reader speed, backup drive write speed and archive volume. The data team should not discover the cost of HQ after the first card fills.
