Frame rate on KOMODO: acquisition rate, project time base and slow motion
Recording frame rate and playback time base are different controls. Know which one is changing before you create slow motion.
Two rates, two jobs
RED distinguishes recording frame rate from project time base. Recording frame rate is how many frames the camera captures each second; project time base is how quickly those frames are intended to play back. Capture above the time base for slow motion; below it for fast motion.
KOMODO headline maximums
- Up to 40 fps at 6K 17:9.
- Up to 50 fps at 6K 2.4:1.
- Up to 48 fps at 5K 17:9.
- Up to 60 fps at 4K 17:9.
- Up to 120 fps at 2K 17:9.
Do not forget field of view
Moving to a lower R3D resolution for a higher frame rate also windows the sensor, so your field of view changes. Re-lens and re-block rather than assuming the 6K composition survives.
Audio warning
RED notes that varispeed recording can affect audio and that sync is not guaranteed in varispeed conditions. Treat high-frame-rate shots as a designed picture/sound choice rather than simply turning the number up.
