R3D conform and finishing: keep the RAW advantage alive to the end

The benefit of RAW capture disappears quickly if the project loses source traceability or color-management discipline.

7 minIndependent field note

The goal of conform

A conform is not merely “relinking high-res files.” It is proving that the final timeline points to the intended source frames with the correct speed, crop, transform and editorial decisions.

Before grading

  • Confirm source clips and timecode.
  • Check retimes, speed ramps, stabilisation, reframes and nested effects.
  • Check offline reference against the conform.
  • Confirm the intended RED interpretation / IPP2 path.
  • Resolve whether VFX shots return as rendered plates or remain linked to camera originals.

During finishing

Keep working-space, creative-look and output-transform decisions distinct. Review the film at the actual target output — not only in the colour suite viewer — and check skin tone, highlight behaviour, black level, noise, sharpening and compression after export.

Delivery is plural

A 4K 16:9 master, a vertical social cut and a captioned 1080p file can fail in different ways. QC each contracted deliverable independently.
